Feature: The Rhythm Divine

ABC Radio National presenter Geoff Wood explores music and song from the world’s religious and sacred traditions-from Indian classical music to mythic Mongolian fiddle and Khoomi chant, extraordinary songs of the Turkish Ashik mystic troubadours to Persian Sufi ney, finishing with the harmonic chant of Tibetan monks.

Bukhu with Nayika Group @ Paddington

This unusual Mehfil (an Indian cultured gathering with music and dance) features Bukhu, an oustanding Mongolian throat singer who plays the horse–hair fiddle, performing in collaboration with Nayika Group featuring Indu Balachandran (Karnatic vocalist) and Sivakumar Sethupathi (South Indian drummer). Evocative of the steppes of Mongolia, the throat singing enhances and complements Karnatic music, in an original and innovative concert.

Come and hear the wonderful rhythmic sounds of the NAFAS World Drumming Concert and participate in drumming workshops in what promises to be a ‘feast for the senses’.

Bukhu in Sydney Sacred Music Festival

NAFAS is a musical collaboration between six musicians from different cultural backgrounds and musical traditions but all with an interest in the ‘Rhythms of Life’. This one hour performance takes you from meditation to celebration!

Yama Sarshar (Tabla) and Masi Sarshar (Harmonium) are Afghani Australians, born and bred in Blacktown and from a long line of Afghani musicians. Philippe Lincy was born in Guadeloupe and has studied African drumming in Guinea and other parts of Africa. Bukhchuluun Ganburged has recently arrived from Mongolia and is a renowned throat singer and horse fiddle player. Chris Field is a third generation drummer from the USA, studies and plays Tabla and plays and teaches western drums. Richard Petkovic (Music Director) has worked with contemporary music for 20 years with a deep interest in creating cross cultural music and has studied with world music practitioners to deepen his ability to listen.

The famous Cafe Carnivale Fiesta will showcase some of the best talent on Sydney’s world music scene; including Jeannie Lewis, Peter Guarino, Hugo Leal, Christian Isola, Bukhu and Moussa Diakite. As a finale to Cafe Carnivale’s 10th Birthday season these artists will gather for a fun night of improvised collaboration. There will be something for every taste, as they perform individually before coming together for an all-in jam session.
